DESCRIPTION | This comprehensive course offers a deep exploration of both protein engineering and advanced structural biology techniques. Students will gain a thorough understanding of protein structure and function, as well as the principles and techniques of designing, modifying, and optimizing proteins for various biotechnological, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications. Students will delve into different protein engineering strategies, including rational design, directed evolution, and computational modeling, and explore various applications of protein engineering, such as enzyme engineering, protein design, antibody engineering, protein-based therapeutics, biomaterials, and biocatalysis. They will also acquire practical skills in protein expression, purification, and characterization. Moreover, students will delve into key “high-resolution” techniques such as X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and microelectron diffraction (microED), which provide detailed insights into macromolecular structure and dynamics. They will also explore “low resolution” biophysical methods for characterizing protein-ligand interactions, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of molecular interactions and their role in drug discovery, structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis, and protein engineering.
